Quilts

Quilts are one of our main products and one that we have provided to community organizations for many years.  Our Community Service team makes kits that members may take home and make.

Preemie Quilts

UC Davis has requested quilts for preemies that measure about 32 inches square.  They no longer put quilts over isolets, but allow families to pick a quilt they  like.

Wheelchair Quilts

Wheelchair quilts are specialized, small-sized lap blankets (typically designed for comfort, warmth, and safety). They can feature secure attachments such as Velcro straps, pockets, and specialized foot-warming "toe boxes" to prevent tangling with wheels. Ideal for elderly or disabled users, these quilts are often made with soft materials, such as fleece backing, to prevent slipping.

Wheelchair Quilt Sizes:

  • Small, 33"x40"
  • Small Square, 36"x36"
  • Medium, 36"x40"
  • Large, 40"x40"

Palliative Care Quilts
Palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with serious illnesses, focusing on relieving symptoms, pain, and stress to improve quality of life for patients and families. Unlike hospice, it is not restricted to end-of-life care and can be provided alongside curative treatment. It addresses physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

Palliative care quilts are best designed as lap quilts or small throws, typically ranging from 36" x 40" to 50" x 70", with 40" x 60" being a highly recommended size for covering patients in beds or recliners. They should be lightweight, warm, and easy to wash.

Key Recommendations:

  • Ideal Sizes: 40" x 60", 48" x 52", 50" x 70", or 36" x 45".
  • Functionality: Should fit over a person in a hospital bed, chair, or wheelchair without dragging on the floor.
Materials: Soft, warm materials such as flannel or cotton with a cozy backing are preferred.
  • Design: Avoid heavy materials; simple, bright designs are often appreciated.
  • It is always recommended to check with the local hospice or hospital, as some have specific size requirements

We've also been asked to provide patterns so members may make Community Service quilts from their own stash.
